Day 8 24/4/2008
Unfortunately the CRUISE has been CANCELLED. The reason is a serious problem
with one engine. Now we are sailing back toward The Minch. Then we will know
in which port we will land. There is NO PROBLEM of safety on board. We will keep
informing you about the situation and we will use the remaining time on
board as an occasion to talk about science and oceanography in such an "ideal"
laboratory as the RSS Discovery. We are very sorry for Jane Read who has worked hard organizing this cruise.
Regards Arturo and Emilio.

Day 7 23/4/2008
Cynthia Dumousseaud (NOCS)
I am a student at the National Oceanography Centre of Southampton, and I am interested in the chemistry of CO2 in sea water. Due to increasing atmospheric concentration of CO2 since the industrial revolution, the pH of seawater is decreasing. It is important to understand how the exchange of CO2 between the atmosphere and the ocean affects the chemistry and the biology of the ocean. My work is thus focused on Ocean Acidification, and I am measuring the pH of sea water, but also Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC), and Total Alkalinity (TA). On this cruise I am measuring pH of sea water continuously from the underway supply of the ship (approximately 5 meters depth) with a pH measurement in average every minute, and on two different systems (potentiometric and spectrophotometric). I will also take discrete underway and CTD samples, for DIC and TA measurements, which I will be analyzing back to NOCS. |

Day 7 23/4/2008
Today we send a little interview to Colin Griffiths. The moral is high on board and everybody is ready to start the campaign. We should start the first measurement tomorrow in the early morning.

Day 5 21/4/2008 Dr. Jane Read
Little Interview to Dr. Jane Read (principal scientist on board).
Jane speaks about the different groups of scientist that are on this
cruise...
In the next days every scientist will talk a little bit about what is
doing on board and we will pubblish on our website.

Day 5 21/4/2008 8:00am GMT
Very Well! The Discovery is finally sailing. We should sail about 3 days
before starting make measurments. We will keep in contact. The weather is
nice and the moral is high.
Little interview to Master Roger. |

Day 4 20/4/2008 5:10pm GMT
We Sail!!!Everybody is happy. Tomorrow morning we leave Hull at 7:30am GMT. Today we send a little interview to the Chief Engineer. We are ready to start and in the next days we will keep you informed about the cruise. We have the possibility to send email and you will receive news every day or every 2 days. Every day each of the scientists on board will write a little text about his research and we will publish it on our web site. Our LEVIATHAN clothes will be certainly useful.
See you soon Arturo and Emilio. |

(Still in Hull): day3 19/4/2008 3:20pm GMT
Good news. It seems that the Discovery will sail tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, therefore we are happy. Destination is Rockall following the Ellett Line. Today is a preparation day for the campaign. Jane and John are defining the role of each of us. The ship is carrying on board different instruments. Today we send a little interview with John Allen who tells us the situation on board. Have a look at it!
The sky is grey, the moral is high, the food is very good, we got beer, people on board are very nice.
We’ll try to keep you informed every day.

Movie3 (From Hull): Day 2
Problems on Board!
The engine has developed some serious problems. Hopefully we will sail on Monday. The result of this delay is that we will only be able to take our measurements in the transect connecting Scotland with Rockall. Clearly we are disappointed that there has been another delay, but we look forward to hopefully sailing on Monday. Will keep you informed as to our progress.
Regards Emilio |

Movie2 (From Hull): Day 2
Everything is going to plan. We will sail on 19th of April. Destination: Iceland. The campaign was scheduled to have started at the beginning of April, but due to technical problems, the cruise length has been reduced. Due to this the cruise will now be 10 days long.
Measurements will be taken in the transect connecting Iceland with Rockall. Although the time at sea has been reduced the data collected will nonetheless remain important. We look forward to contributing whilst on board.
Regards Arturo and Emilio. |
