Here are some projects that we at EOT are working on:
1.
OCEAN SUN WEEK
Our weekly webzine, Ocean Sun Week, will be a review of news and studies that relate to our mission: To increase public awareness of climate change, sustainable development, conservation of the natural environment and renewable energy. Every week EOT staff will pick a selection of papers, news articles and press releases on climate, energy and the environment. Readers will be able to contribute their own material and express their viewpoints. Ocean Sun Week aims at being open, informative, thought-provoking and captivating – watch this space!
2.
A FUTURE EVENT – AND AN EVENT ABOUT THE FUTURE
EOT are organizing a two-part show for a date TBA in Summer 2008 in Bocca di Magra (close to La Spezia), Italy:
Part 1 – An “Interview with the Future” by Dario Vergassola concerning climate change, the greenhouse effect, the energy crisis, melting ice, extreme weather etc. We hear a lot about these things in the media – sometimes leading to confusion for the public. The objective of this event is to clarify the facts relating to these topics, and to explain them to the “man in the street”.
The popular TV comic Dario Vergassola, a genuine “spezzino” (native of La Spezia), will use his rare talent for conducting interviews on serious topics in a light-hearted, witty and entertaining manner. Under Vergassola’s scrutiny, some ocean and climate researchers from EOT will present data, images of our planet from space, reports from Antarctica and other fascinating places, and will be forced to explain in a readily understandable fashion what all the fuss is about!
Part 2 – An ironic guitar – “bitter smiles on the future” by Stefano Nosei
Stefano Nosei will use his trademark irony for an excursion on our many bad habits (consumerism, waste of resources, alienation) and how they affect our planet. The earth system is on a disaster course: and Nosei and his guitar will sing to us what we are going to face.... if we don’t change our attitudes!
3.
SAILING AND SCIENCE IN THE PARK
This project, with the INForMando group of INFM-CNR, consists of a series of lectures on board sailing boats in the Cinque Terre Marine Park. The lectures will deal with themes such as biodiversity in the Park, climate change, renewable energy, the importance of environmental preservation for sustainable tourism and the fight against pollution. Students from different age groups will attend these lectures, and audiovisual media will be produced, which can then be used for educational purposes in schools at regional and national level.
4.
GENOA SCIENCE FESTIVAL
Environmental Ocean Team is working towards the Festival della Scienza di Genova 2008 (Genoa Science Festival) with the INForMando group of INFM-CNR. Our project is a 25-minute movie on the state of the oceans and their recent changes, also using some of the material from the “Sailing and Science in the Park” project, aiming at linking the undersea world with what is happening on land and illustrating some options for more sustainable development. The viewers’ experience will be enhanced by using surround audio and video techniques, so that they have the impression of being fully immersed in the action.
5.
MONITORING IN THE PARK
EOT has also submitted to the Cinque Terre National Park a project for monitoring the area’s circulation (currents), water quality and pollution. We are also aiming at organizing seminars and public lectures to get the local public (and young people in particular) involved.
6.
DOCUMENTARY
EOT is working on a documentary series with the prestigious production company MAGNOLIA (www.magnoliatv.it). This series will deal with sailing, climate change and the fundamental importance of the oceans on our climate, and will feature the famous sailor Giovanni Soldini, one of the founding Directors of EOT, and other world-class sailors and scientists.
7.
COOPERATION WITH LMF AND PARTNERS SIM S.p.A.
LMF & Partners SIM S.p.A. (asset managers) collaborates with EOT sponsoring its projects.
LMF & Partners’ awareness of environmental problems has led it to create a new investment line: DEEP BLUE. The criteria for DEEP BLUE investments are characterized by the attention to environmental issues and sustainable development. EOT members share their environmental expertise with LMF & Partners, with EOT director Marco Bianucci sitting on the committee that strategically chooses the investments within DEEP BLUE.
8.
EOT AT SEA
Some EOT members are going to take part in oceanographic cruises organized by other research institutes. They will help colleagues in sampling and data collection, and in the dissemination of research results, which will also be published on our website). EOT, with Arturo delle Donne (www.arturodelledonne.com) and our director Emilio Tesi will be on board RRS Discovery in a cruise from Scotland to Iceland led by NOCS (National Oceanography Centre Southampton - see (http://www.noc.soton.ac.uk/obe/PROJECTS/EEL/index.php). We envisage the production of joint NOCS/EOT papers and a full photographic portfolio by Arturo.
